Description: Artist Ed Kayton documented the sacred process of the construction of Mauloa, the first canoe built by Nā Kālai Waʻa in partnership with PVS and Bishop Musuem's project NHCap. This is the complete set of that series (four posters total).
Poster 1 "Hoʻokupu" - This image is a glimpse into the elaborate ceremony that occured at the felling of the koa tree that was reincarnated at Mauloa sailing canoe.
Poster 2 "Kahuna Kālaiwaʻa" - This image depicts the working environment of the Kahuna Kālaiwaʻa (the canoe builder) within his hālau waʻa (canoe shed). This particular hālau waʻa was constructed at Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Park, the site of Mauloa's completion.
Poster 3 "Lā Hoʻolana" - This image showcases the blessing of the canoe Mauloa before her birth or launch into Hōnaunau bay in 1993.
Poster 4 "Holo Mauloa" - This image celebrates the official birth or launch of Mauloa sailing canoe. She was the first sailing canoe carved from a complete log and made out of traditional tools and techniques for almost 100 years.
