Nā Kālai Waʻa was established the year we launched our canoe Mauloa. Thirty years later, we at Nā Kālai Waʻa continue the practices of our teacher Pius Mau Piailug, our founder Clay Bertelmann, and our Kūpuna. Our navigators Shorty Bertelmann and Chadd Paishon guide our programs that we have offered since the launch of Makaliʻi voyaging canoe in February of 1995. In 2022 we provided over 230 programs for over 1074 participants, and we are on track to exceed these numbers in 2023. We estimate that we have provided programs for over 30,000 individuals in our organization’s 30 year history.
