Kanu o ka ʻĀina High School Waʻa Project spent several days with the staff of Nā Kālai Waʻa at Puakaʻilima at Kawaihae. The students learned the history of Puʻukohola & Pelekane and participated in a swim assessment. They also discovered the impacts of coral bleaching at Kawaihae, were taught the basics of CPR & first aid and learned the parts of the waʻa.
Students helped assemble parts of Kiakahi, the coastal double-hulled vessel they used to sail around the harbor. Groups of students, teachers, and NKW staff spent hours on the ocean, giving students the chance to practice the knowledge and skills they obtained during their year-long project and feel firsthand what itʻs like to be on the deck of the canoe.
